Course Description:
This course is a two chapter excerpt from Treatment Improvement Protocol Series #37, Substance Abuse Treatment for Persons with HIV/AIDS, put out by the US Dept. of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, SAMSHA. It is an overview of current ethical and legal dilemmas unique to the HIV client.
Course Objectives:
1) Be familiar with ethical issues for treatment providers
2) Understand and identify the five basic ethical principles put forth.
3) Recognize ethical issues in working with HIV-infected substance abusers.
4) Work with models and resources for making ethical decisions.
5) Be aware of issues of discrimination as they apply to treatment access.
6) Understand Federal and State statutes and acts that protect clients, employers and employees.
7) Demonstrate knowledge about how confidentiality of client information is managed legally.
