Course Description: This manual focuses on particular infectious diseases which occur frequently among treatment populations and have significant medical and socioeconomic consequences for infected persons. Treatment recommendations largely come from the Center for Diseases Control and Prevention.
Course Objectives: Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:
1) Describe several counseling issues involved in the treatment of patients with infectious diseases 2) Discuss the legal and ethical issues involved in treating patients with HIV/AIDS 3) Explain several factors that are relevant to the 'initial contact' by the clinician of a person with an infectious disease 4) Discuss the protocol for the screening and treatment of a person with tuberculosis and multi-drug tuberculosis 5) Explain the screening and referrals for continuing medical management of patients with HIV/AIDS 6) List several other infectious diseases that pose a problem in the treatment of substance abusers
