Course Description:
This guide, put out by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, is for marriage and family therapists, social workers, counselors and others in the mental health field. Its purpose is to help navigate the tricky waters of alcohol problems in intimate relationships through tools of identification and intervention. Many helpful appendices are included.
Course Objectives:
1) Exhibit familiarity with an "alcohol problems framework" and its implications for alcohol treatment and intervention.
2) Recognize defining characteristics and prevalence of a range of alcohol problems.
3) Describe the significance of alcohol problems in the couple and family context and exhibit familiarity with universal screening procedures.
4) Demonstrate an awareness of the "Clinical Toolbox" screening and assessment tools for alcohol problems.
5) Demonstrate knowledge of the essentials of providing brief interventions for alcohol problems and deciding whether to treat, when to treat, and how to select an appropriate intervention.
6) Show understanding of a range of treatment alternatives and factors to consider in choosing a treatment strategy or making a referral.
