CE Course Description

The U.S. faces a crisis of overdose deaths from opioids, including heroin, illicit fentanyl, and prescription opioids. These deaths represent a small fraction of the total number of Americans impacted by opioid misuse and addiction. Millions of Americans suffer daily from a chronic medical illness called opioid use disorder (OUD), and research indicates that both opioid-related overdose deaths and OUD may be on the rise. As a result, healthcare professionals should possess insight into evidence-based, effective treatment and support care for individuals suffering from OUD. This course reviews the Treatment Improvement Protocol, which provides an overview of the medications, strategies, and services needed to effectively treat and support OUD and opioid use recovery, to provide healthcare professionals with the necessary insight to administer safe and effective healthcare to patients in need.

Author: The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in conjunction with select nonfederal clinical researchers, service providers, program administrators, and patient advocates as a consensus panel offering input on specific topics in their areas of expertise to reach consensus on best practices. Field reviewers then assess draft content and finalize the TIP manual.
