CE Course Description

Disasters can devastate communities, as well as jeopardize individuals' health and overall well-being. Moreover, disasters, whether natural or man-made, can lead to widespread death and destruction. Due to the catastrophic nature of disasters, health care organizations should have disaster plans in place to help mitigate the impact of a disaster on patient care. This course will review the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA) Technical Assistance Publication (TAP), Disaster Planning Handbook for Behavioral Health Service Programs, to provide health care professionals with the necessary insight to develop and improve disaster plans, which may be used in the event of a disaster to ensure effective patient care, and save lives.

CE Course Objectives

1. Examine the rationale and process for disaster planning.
2. Evaluate disaster planning and preparation, while obtaining insight into disaster planning teams and how disasters may impact individuals.
3. Recognize concepts related to continuity planning, while obtaining insight into the effective management of prescription medications.
4. Identify concepts related to planning issues for a pandemic disease.
5. Analyze how to effectively complete, test, activate, and deactivate a disaster plan.

Author:  This report was prepared for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) by a panel of field reviewers, including behavioral health service providers with experience in disaster preparedness and response, who contributed to the original 2013 version of this TAP.  For the 2021 update, subject matter experts and writers reviewed the content to ensure that the revised document realistically reflects how behavioral health service programs can respond to the challenges of disaster preparedness and response. [This TAP was revised during the COVID-19 pandemic.]
